Indigenous to the Mediterranean countries and Asia, Chaste Tree Berry has been renown as both an aphrodisiac and an anaphodisiac. It was known in the middle ages as Monk’s pepper because of its reputed ability to suppress sexual desire in celibate monks. Now in the 20th century it is being touted as the natural female “Viagra”. Chaste Tree Berry’s effects lie in its ability to stimulate and regulate anterior pituitary functions. In particular it can normalize the amount of progesterone in our bodies. German research has discovered that Chaste Tree Berry does this by binding to dopamine2 receptors in the anterior pituitary and decreasing secretion of prolactin. This decrease in prolactin leads to increased progesterone production in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Additionally, Chaste Tree Berry seems to increase luteinizing hormone and help to lengthen a women’s luteal phase. Luteinizing hormone is produced in the pituitary and it is what signals the female body to release an egg. Once the egg is released it is the empty follicle called the corpus lutetium that is responsible for manufacturing female’s monthly surges of progesterone.

Recent findings confirm that Chaste Tree Berry can restore normal estrogen to progesterone balance. Chaste Tree Berry has been successfully used to regulate irregular menses and PMS symptoms including dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, fibroid cysts, and hormonal constipation. It can be used to stabilize the cycle after withdrawal from progesterone birth control pills. For women trying to get pregnant it can regulate the ovulatory cycle and can be safely taken through the end of the first trimester, actually decreasing the risk of miscarriage. It is safe to take after the third month of pregnancy but not recommended, because it may bring on milk flow too early. After the birth however, it may again be taken to stabilize the hormones and increase lactation. Research as shown it to be most effective taken the first ten day after birth.

In England and increasingly in the United States Chaste Tree Berry is being used to relieve the symptoms of menopause. Both PMS and menopause symptoms are commonly caused by estrogen dominance and can benefit from the use of Chaste Tree Berry. For practitioners of Chinese medicine, Peter Holmes categorizes Chaste Tree Berry as entering the Liver, Spleen and in particular regulating the Chong and Ren pathways. See note below.

Other studies indicate Chaste Tree Berry to effectively treat acne in both female and male teenagers.

In summary, Chaste Tree Berry is recommended for the treatment of PMS, abnormal menses, and fertility challenges especially if a progesterone deficiency is suspected. In 2 large studies conducted in Germany, with more than 1500 participants, 57% experienced significant improvement of PMS symptoms and 1/3 of the participants expressed 100% relief of symptoms. Clinical research shows that Chaste Tree Berry may work in as fast as ten days, but generally to see full effect one should take for a minimum of 3 full cycles. With PMS, positive results may be seen by the 2nd cycle but permanent improvement may take up to a year.

Chaste Tree Berry has little to no side effects, with less than 2% reporting mild nausea or rash. Chaste Tree Berry can be taken as an infusion, tablet or tincture. Dosage would be one half to one gram dried berries infused for 10-15 minutes or current dosage recommendations for water-alcohol extracts and tablets are an average daily dose equivalent to 20 to 40 mg of fresh berries. Preparations have also been standardized to contain 0.5% agnuside with the recommended dosage as 175 to 225 mg per day.

Note: Traditional Chinese Medicine uses a similar herb Man Jing Zi, or Vitex Rotoundifolia.

Both species are from the same family, verbenaceae, but have been used differently. Man Jing Zi is used to relieve wind heat, and clear heat from the liver. Used for headaches and eye pain or in combination with other herbs for Wind heat colds.

Contributed by Annie Meneakis, LCSW

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the season of winter holidays was truly described with the classic lovely words: joy, light, peace, beauty, and charity of heart, while the other common but not so lovely words: stress, hassle, and hurried were replaced with, “time of serene reflection, making room for joy, slowing down to take in the beauty, connecting with those we cherish?”

There are small practices we can utilize in this season to bring the latter more to life/more to light. Holding firm to what brings us meaning in this season is a wonderful way to keep the stress at bay and make room for what is most important to us. Try making yourself a cup of tea and in a quiet moment, writing down three words to describe what you most loved about the winter holidays you have celebrated in the past, that felt the most filled with joy, or beauty, or with a sense of connectedness to others. If there are other words to best describe what you most wish for yourself and those you love for this coming holiday season, write those words down too. Place the three words which convey the deepest meaning for you, where you will see them at the beginning of every day this holiday season.

Each week, you can write down 4 simple things you can do to make those words come to life/light. For example, make a paper star, or candle with a note to tell someone how they bring light into your day/life, then send it or put it in their lunch box; make time to take a walk slow enough to stop and look at your favorite winter trees; make a winter nature’s beauty collage, call an old friend you haven’t spoken to in ages; take more tea breaks and practice mindfulness while sipping; or linger for a moment to really take in the fragrances you most love in this season, such as mandarin orange peels, or cinnamon or cedar sprigs, or chocolate gelt.

Check in to see what you might need to let go, in order to make room for moments with more meaning. Another day with another cup of tea, you can make a plan for simplifying-the-holidays to bring down the pace and so, keep the stress at bay. How many events felt like too much for you or your family, how many gifts being bought felt over the top, or what time of day or evening do you need to end outings so that you have time at home to slow down and simply enjoy being present in the moment and in the season? Tape the plan for simplifying your schedule to your calendar, so that you can follow through with setting the boundaries required for simplifying the pace of your days/evenings.

Make a practice of setting a moment here and there in the day to check in with how you’re feeling. Stress lingers in our bodies. The simple practice of mindfulness where we check in, with awareness, with what is happening in our bodies, can be such a helpful tool for noting if we need to take a moment to stretch, exhale, or simply just ‘be.’ And the more aware we are of what is happening inside us, we are more able to communicate more mindfully, more lovingly in the present moment with those we love. If you find yourself feeling stressed, take a moment to follow your breath. You can simply note the inhale and the exhale, or you can imagine breathing in a feeling of peace and exhaling stress. These are great practices to utilize when you get home, or when you get in your car after going shopping or after a rough day at work, so that you can return home to be present with those to whom you wish to give a present.

Wishing you much joy and peace this holiday season and in the New Year

I had spoken with several friends that used acupuncture for fertility and thought I would give it a try. Not remembering the name of the recommendation, I googled acupuncture and fertility and found Blossom Clinic. I had my initial consultation with Liz and felt completely at ease. For 1.5 years, I was treated at Blossom with acupuncture, AMMA therapy and massage. I am so thankful to everyone at Blossom for their encouragement, knowledge and friendship. I was truly blessed to find such a wonderful group of professionals. I have a beautiful, happy 5 month old and would recommend Blossom to anyone that is looking to conceive, already pregnant or just wants a fabulous treatment from experienced professionals. Thank you Liz, Rylen, Tiffany, Molly and Jennie

I found Blossom Clinic prior to going through a Frozen Embryo Transfer. My goal was to get my body, mind and spirit as ready as possible for the procedure as I only had one blastocyst to transfer, which gave my something like a 26% chance of success according to my Reproductive Endocrinologist. I had previously had such a good experience with acupuncture supporting me through and IVF process in the Bay Area. Liz was actually recommended to me by my acupuncturist in the Bay Area. I was very impressed with Liz’s knowledge of all things related to women’s heath and fertility issues. She never seemed rushed during my visits and I always took the time to check in with me and my current concerns. Her treatments were very relaxing and I always felt great after I left.

I also made an appointment with Rylen to check in on my nutrition in more detail. Rylen was great as well and I found her suggestions very helpful and easy to implement. I also made an appointment for Mayan massage prior to my transfer and had a great experience with this too. I would not hesitate to recommend any of the practitioners I have seen at Blossom and I thank them all for the great care I received. I am happy to report that the embryo transfer was a success and I now have a happy and healthy baby girl. Now that my girl is here, I plan to follow up at Blossom to address some postpartum concerns. The office is beautiful and there are some amazing healers all under one roof.

I LOVE Blossom Clinic. From the complementary consultation to the easy way in which Liz and Molly interface with their clients- this is the place to be. Liz is crazy talented and over the moon committed, going above and beyond daily. Molly is professional, efficient and friendly. The space is lovely and calming. And most of all, you’ll get results. Liz really, really cares about her clients. If you are at all searching for stellar care in women’s health, come here. You will not be disappointed.

After Googling fertility and acupuncture in the Portland area I was lucky enough to happen upon Blossom’s website. My husband and I had been trying to get pregnant for 1 1/2 years with no luck. 3 months of acupuncture and herbal supplements later and success! I couldn’t have been happier with Liz, the whole clinic and our experience in general. Both my husband and I will continue with acupuncture at Blossom to treat anything that may come up in the future.

Contributed by Dr. Elise Schroeder

I am sad to see the Summer go. It’s my favorite season – the time in Portland when the city comes alive with perfect weather and a plethora of amazing outdoor cafes and restaurants. It’s always such a pleasure to brunch at Tasty n sons , or to have an outdoor happy hour IPA at Portland’s own Hopworks brew pub, or treat the in-laws to a delicious savory dinner of local meat and wine at Olympic Provisions. The repercussions from too much of this imbibing, like bloating, weight gain and sluggishness, are less pleasant. This, coupled with the shorter days, the cooler temperatures and the approach of flu season, makes Autumn the perfect time to clean up the diet, improve digestion and reset the immune system.

Every autumn my partner Scott and I embark on some kind of health diet – what Naturopathic doctors call a cleanse. Three years ago it was an elimination diet. Two years ago it was 3 months of the “Anti candida diet”, last year it was my two week detox diet that includes a few days of juice fasting and this year the cleanse we are doing is what I have fondly called the post summer-of-gluttony “paleo” cleanse.

There are so many great reasons that i love this annual ritual. It gives me a natural boost of energy before the daylight wanes, improves my digestion, and hep me shed a few pounds. It also reminds me that planning and preparing food is not that hard! Actually, the benefits of having food that doesn’t make me sluggish or pack on the pounds are way beyond the mild annoyance of having to plan and prepare meals. One of the other reasons I do this to myself, and Scott, is because any of these diets that we try out, are recommendations that i give to my patients. I can’t tell someone else to eat a certain way unless i have already tried it myself! So, here we are mid-way through our paleo-cleanse 2011.

But, what is a cleanse?

A cleanse is a period in which a person might abstain form food or activities, usually with the purpose of increasing vitality, losing weight, reducing pain, detoxification, improving particular health problems and more. It can be strictly food related, or can include abstaining form activities like TV watching, alcohol, internet surfing and more. It also can include adding in healthy activities like gentle exercise, sauna, yoga, epsom salt baths or mediation.

My cleanses always involve a diet modification. Usually eliminating things that you regularly eat or drink that might be making you feel less vital than you could be. Common offenders: alcohol, wheat, gluten, dairy and sugar. Less common but also on the list of common irritants: corn, soy, nightshades, nuts, and chicken.

How about Colon cleansing?

Some think of colon cleansing as a cleanse, and this refers to using colonics or increasing fiber in the diet to produce more frequent and more complete bowel movements. While normalizing bowel function is very important during a cleanse, not all cleanses need to include targeted colon cleansing.

How to choose which cleanse to do?

Every person is unique. We all have individual needs in general and different needs at different times in our lives. It’s best if the cleanse you choose to embark on has been tailored to suit your particular needs. For example, a person who is very weak, yet still under the pressure of a demanding lifestyle should not try a juice fast. And a pregnant woman, would not want to be doing a liver detox or a fast.

Not all cleansing means fasting. We’ve been eating plenty on our cleanse this month.

Here is an example of a day of eating on our paleo-cleanse :

Breakfast: detox smoothie- detox powder, blueberries, flax seeds and coconut milk

Snack: Fritatta muffins

Lunch: beef and vegetable stew ( leftover from dinner)

Snack: celery, red pepper slices, carrot sticks and a handful of home sprouted nuts

Dinner: Roasted brussel sprouts, baked cod, salad

Dessert: Figs and walnuts for me, coconut paleo “ice cream” and berries for Scott

Greetings! It’s November and the holiday season is upon us!

Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday of the year. Good food, good company and time off! Yet, despite my best efforts, once Thanksgiving is over, time seems to whiz by way too fast rushing head first into the New Year, often leaving me a bit frayed and short on rest. If you feel the same way, consider joining me this November and December in an “adult” timeout.

This Holiday Season, The Wellspring School for Healing Arts has gathered some fantastic practitioners and educators in the Portland area to offer a series of community classes titled Nurture the Soul. The classes are held Monday and Wednesday evenings and offer a great variety of self-care, relaxation, energy building, and sanity inducing evenings to help you nurture yourself through the season. Check them out!

For more info go to our website or reserve your space in a class here!

If you think these classes are a great idea but just don’t have time in your schedule, please forward the information to friends and family! All are welcome!

On another note, if you are interested in sinking your teeth into a dedicated class on nutrition, consider joining us for our Fundamentals of Healthy Living Class series. These classes are in an intensive weekend workshop format and are a part of our Wholistic Nutrition Program curriculum. They can be taken as part of the series or by themselves and they are open to everyone.

Warmly,

Creating Closeness: Mindful Communication Tools for Relationships

Tuesday, February 28th

6:00-8:30 pm at Blossom Clinic

$25 per person, $35 per couple

Book online under Online Store ->Packages for a 10% discount using Promotion Code Blossom10.

Mindfulness is a way of listening so that each partner feels heard & a way of speaking openly so that each person feels cared for and respected.

Whether you are going through a stressful or difficult time in your relationship or simply wish to deepen your connection and build more open communication; whether you are able to come as a couple or come on your own, this workshop is for you.

Research on mindfulness in communication between partners in relationships has shown that using mindful communication techniques

Enhances partners’ sense of closeness with one another[1]

Improves quality of communication in the relationship[2]

Decreases interpersonal conflict[3]

Specific mindfulness techniques for listening and speaking with your partner to enhance closeness, increase openness and stay connected even through difficult conversations or stressful times, will be taught and practiced in the workshop so that participants can use these tools at home. No prior meditation or mindfulness experience is required.

This workshop is being taught by Annie Meneakis, LCSW. Annie offers couples and individual counseling at Blossom Clinic. She has been practicing mindfulness since 1982, and has been a mental health professional for 24 years.
